TOEFL Speaking Take an Interview:

   ↓
Why?
   ↓
   ↓
Result
   ↓

Why → Concrete → Result

Part 1|

Q1|What kind of movies do your family or friends like?

Question

What kind of movies do your family or friends generally like to watch? For example, do they prefer action movies, comedies, dramas, or other types?

Comedies
   ├─ Relaxation
│ └─ after work / study → relax and laugh
   │
   └─ Language learning
        └─ expressions → puns / wordplay → vocabulary

Version 1|

Well, we prefer comedies, especially the kind of movies that suit different age groups, including adults and kids. One reason is that we like to watch comedies as a family, and we laugh out loud together.

It’s also a learning process for kids. When we watch movies that aren’t in Chinese, they can pick up words and expressions from other languages, whether it’s English or Japanese. So it’s a good way to immerse themselves in language learning.

Version 2|

Well, pretty much everybody I know, including me, watches a lot of comedies because comedies are fun to watch and make you laugh. They’re a good way to relax, especially after a hard day of work or study. That’s the main reason we like watching comedies.

Plus, it’s also a good way to learn the language. No matter what language the comedy is in, it uses different phrases, like puns and wordplay. So it’s a very educational way to expand your vocabulary.

“We laugh together.” “They help us relax, especially after work or study.”
“Kids can learn languages.”

general idea → more specific information

fun → enjoy → laugh

laugh → relax → forget about stress

Version 3|TOEFL 优化版

Well, most people in my family prefer comedies because they’re easy for both adults and kids to enjoy. The main reason is that they help us relax. After a long day, we can sit down together, laugh at the same jokes, and forget about work or school for a while.

They can also be useful for language learning. If we watch an English or Japanese comedy, the kids can pick up everyday expressions, puns, and wordplay in context. So for us, comedies are both entertaining and educational.

laugh at the same jokes
relax after a long day 忙碌一天后放松

Q2|Weekdays or weekends?

Question

When you watch a movie, do you prefer to watch after work or school on weekdays, or do you like to watch during the weekends? Why?

Weekends
   ↓
more time
   ↓
no need to stay up late
   ↓
won't affect the next morning
   ↓
can watch the whole movie
   ↓
can give it full attention

Version 1|

Well, I prefer to watch movies on weekends. The main reason is that during weekdays, we’re usually very busy. After work, I don’t really have much time to watch movies.

If I do watch a movie, it means I have to stay up late, and the next day I can’t get up early, which would affect my work.

Also, when I watch a movie, I prefer to watch the whole movie in one go. On weekends, I have more time to do that. During weekdays, it’s really hard to watch a whole movie without getting tired.

Version 2|

Well, I would definitely pick weekends because I usually have more time during weekends, while on weekdays I’m always very busy.

I don’t have much time to watch movies after work. If I do, I have to stay up late, and then I can’t get up easily the next morning, which can affect my work.

Plus, I like to watch a movie from beginning to end. So weekends make total sense because I can give it 100% of my attention and enjoy every bit of it, including the music, sound effects, and visual effects. Watching on a big TV is better, too.

Reason
Why
Result 1
Result 2
Result 3

如果只是“一口气看完一部电影”,比起 binge-watch,更自然的是 watch the whole movie in one sitting

Version 3|TOEFL 优化版

Well, I’d definitely choose weekends because I can give a movie my full attention. On weekdays, I’m usually tired after work, and if I stay up late to finish a movie, it affects me the next morning.

On weekends, I don’t have that pressure, so I can watch the whole movie in one sitting and really enjoy the experience. I can pay attention to the music, sound effects, and visuals instead of constantly checking the time. That’s why weekends are much better for me.

stay up late 熬夜
affect my work 影响工作
from beginning to end
give something my full attention
constantly check the time 一直看时间

Q3|Will movie theaters continue to exist?

Question

In the past, people mostly watched movies in theaters. Today, many people watch movies at home. Do you think that movie theaters will continue to exist in the future? Why or why not?

Reason 1: social activity
Reason 2: meet new people

social
 → friends
 → bonding
 → meeting people
 → being sociable

Home viewing is getting better
   ├─ better screens / experience
   ├─ save travel time
   ├─ save money
   └─ avoid crowded theaters

Version 1|

Yes, I do. I think theaters will continue to exist for a long time in the foreseeable future. I think it mainly comes down to two reasons.

Firstly, going to the movies is not only a movie experience, but also a social activity. You go to the movies with your friends, and you laugh together and cry together. So it’s an opportunity to bond with your friends, and it’s really hard to do that if you just watch a movie at home.

Secondly, going out also means you get to make new friends, meet new people, and be sociable. I guess the social part is the main reason movie theaters are going to exist for a long time.

Version 2|

Well, I think movie theaters are going to disappear eventually, especially as screen sizes get bigger. People are getting bigger TVs, and the viewing experience is much more immersive than before.

A lot of people enjoy watching movies at home because they don’t need to go out, spend extra time traveling to a movie theater, or pay for the movies there.

Sometimes theaters are also very crowded, and the experience isn’t as good as watching movies at home.

social viewing experience
friends convenience / travel time
bonding cost
meet people crowding
sociable

Firstly… Secondly…

Version 3|TOEFL 优化版

Well, I think movie theaters will probably become less common in the future, although I don’t think they’ll disappear completely. Home viewing has improved a lot because TVs are getting bigger and the picture and sound quality are much better than before.

It’s also more convenient. People don’t have to travel anywhere, buy a ticket, or sit in a crowded theater. For many people, watching at home already provides a good enough experience. So I think theaters will survive, but they’ll probably become more of a special-occasion choice.

in the foreseeable future
picture and sound quality

Q4|Are movies an effective way to educate people?

Question

Some people believe that movies can be a powerful tool for educating people and raising awareness about important issues. Do you agree with this idea, or do you think there are other, more effective ways to educate people? Explain why you think so.

It depends...
   ↓
   ↓
movies are educational
   ↓
short videos may be better
   ↓

I think it really depends on the age group.

Audience / age group
   ├─ Teenagers
│ └─ longer educational content can work
   │
   └─ Working adults
└─ less time → short videos may work better
Version 1|

Well, I think it depends. Some movies are educational, and they can be good for audiences from kindergarten students all the way to older people.

But movies are usually a bit long. So I guess in some situations, short videos are better for educating people, especially working people. They don’t really have much time to watch movies.

So using short videos is a good way to attract their attention and educate them. I guess it all comes down to different age groups.

Version 2|

Well, I think it really depends on the age group. Movies can be educational for teenagers, especially if schools play these kinds of educational movies for them. Teenagers may have more time, and they can pay more attention to these educational programs.

Whereas for working adults, they don’t necessarily have that much time to watch movies. So for them, I think the best medium is probably short videos because short videos don’t take much time, and they can watch them on their phones whenever they have time.

So short videos may actually be a better way to educate them.

It depends. It depends on the age group.

Version 3|TOEFL 优化版

Well, I think it depends on the audience. For teenagers, educational movies can work well because schools can show them in class, and students usually have enough time to follow a longer story or explanation.

But for working adults, short videos may be more effective. Many adults have busy schedules, so it’s difficult for them to sit through a full-length movie. A short video can deliver one clear idea in just a few minutes, and people can watch it on their phones whenever they have time. So the best format really depends on the audience.

it depends on the audience
have a busy schedule
sit through a full-length movie

Reason 1

Prepare two. Output one to two.

social → friends → bonding → meet people → sociable

This is because…
For example… / Like…
So…

It's convenient.
It's really easy.
It's very useful.
It's much more convenient for me.

It's convenient.
↓
I don't need to drive to a theater.
↓
That saves me about half an hour.
↓
So I can watch something even on a busy evening.

Don’t say it again. Go one level deeper.

age / available time

Lens
Money
Convenience
Feelings
Health
Learning

That’s a very interesting question and I’ve never really thought about it before…

I think it depends on the audience.
For me, the biggest issue is time.
I'd definitely choose weekends because...
I think this will become less common because...

Well, let me see.
Well, let me think for a moment.

   ↓
1. Answer
   ↓
2. Pick a lens
Time? Money? Convenience? Feelings?
Health? People? Learning?
   ↓
3. Develop
Why?
   ↓
Concrete detail / example
   ↓
Result
   ↓

  1. 想新的内容;
  2. 组织新的英文;

Well-developed is more important than more reasons.

Don’t say it again. Go one level deeper.

Prepare two. Output one to two.

TOEFL Take an Interview
