Q1. Thank you for your time today. I’d like to discuss social media use with you. Which social media platforms do you or your friends use? How often do you or they use them?

How often do you use it?

Sample Answer

“I mainly use WeChat. It’s a very popular platform in China. You can chat with people, make voice or video calls, and post pictures and videos on Moments. It’s pretty much the go-to app for me, and almost all of my friends use it as well.

I’ve been using it for over ten years. I don’t use it constantly, but altogether, I probably spend more than an hour a day on it. I also use it for work, so at this point, it’s pretty much essential for me.”

Q2. Thank you. Why do you or people you know primarily use social media? Is it for staying in touch, entertainment, or another reason?

先直接说明自己主要用 social media 来 keep in touch with friends

Social media is more convenient.

Sample Answer

“I guess mainly it’s for keeping in touch. Social media makes it really easy to reach out to friends. You can send them a message, but you can also share photos, videos, links, or even your location.

Compared with traditional phone calls or text messages, I think social media gives you more ways to stay connected. For example, even if I haven’t talked to a friend recently, I can still see their posts and know what they’ve been up to. So for me, staying connected is probably the main reason I use it.”

Q3. Interesting. Can you share a positive experience you or someone you know has had while using social media?

Social media helps people make friends.

social media can sometimes reconnect people who have lost touch.

Sample Answer

“Yeah, actually, there was one time when WeChat recommended an old friend to me. I hadn’t talked to him in probably over ten years, but I immediately recognized him from his profile picture.

If it hadn’t been for WeChat, I probably would have completely lost touch with him. I think that’s one big advantage of social media. Sometimes the algorithm can reconnect you with people you haven’t seen for years, whereas a traditional phone or text message obviously can’t do that.”

Q4. There’s an ongoing debate about social media’s impact on face-to-face communication. Some say it decreases the likelihood of making plans to see friends face-to-face, while others argue it makes face-to-face connection easier. What is your opinion and why?

Is social media convenient?

而是:

Does social media make face-to-face connection easier or less likely?

social media makes face-to-face communication easier.

send a message → decide where to meet → share your location → use navigation → meet in person

Instead of replacing face-to-face communication, social media removes some of the difficulty involved in arranging it.

Opinion → Example → How it works → Link back to the question

Sample Answer

“I think social media actually makes face-to-face communication easier. For example, it’s much easier to arrange a meeting with friends. You can just send them a message, decide where to meet, and even share your exact location directly through WeChat.

Then your friends can open the location and use their phone to navigate there. So instead of replacing face-to-face communication, I think social media removes some of the difficulty involved in arranging it. It actually makes meeting people in person more convenient.”
